Some flies naturally spend long periods circling in the air, particularly near the centre of a room or around hanging lights. Lesser house flies are known for this behaviour. They do land, but may spend much of the day flying. That matters because a residual surface treatment needs the insect to contact a treated surface.
If you have watched a fly circle the lounge while you wait for it to land, you will know how frustrating that can be. Understanding the behaviour helps explain why one approach may not cover every part of a fly problem.
Circling can be part of a fly’s normal flight behaviour. Kiwicare describes lesser house flies flying repeated, angular circuits near the middle of rooms, often around lights or other hanging objects. They may keep flying for long periods and settle later.
That does not mean every circling fly is a lesser house fly. Different flies need different approaches, and flight behaviour alone is not enough to identify the species.
Read Kiwicare’s explanation of common fly behaviour.
Residual insect treatments work on suitable surfaces where listed insects land, rest or travel. An insect flying around the middle of the room has not necessarily contacted those surfaces yet.
Seeing a fly after a treatment does not, by itself, tell you whether that treatment is working. It is useful to consider the type of fly, where it is appearing, how it is getting in and whether there is a breeding source nearby.
The Pest Management Association of New Zealand explains that fly activity may not stop immediately after treatment. Identifying the fly and addressing conditions that support it are important parts of control.
BugBlock provides interior and exterior insect treatments across Whangārei and Northland. We select the approach for the insects, the property and the areas needing attention.
The dispenser complements the professional treatment. It does not replace identifying the pest, addressing breeding sources or following the preparation and aftercare advice.
When you book BugBlock Interior + Exterior Treatment together, we include an automatic insect spray kit valued at $59. It contains the dispenser, spray can and batteries, plus printed setup and use instructions.
The kit is included with combined interior and exterior treatments only. It is not included with an interior-only or exterior-only booking.
The dispenser has selectable spray intervals and operating modes for daytime, night-time or around-the-clock use. Follow the directions on the spray can and the printed guide, including placement requirements around food, people, pets and fish tanks.

Treatment is one part of the plan. A few practical checks can help reduce the opportunities for flies to enter and breed:
A recurring fly problem may need investigation rather than simply more spray. PMANZ’s guide to preventing and treating flies around the home explains the importance of identifying breeding sources and limiting entry.
Tell us where you are seeing the insects and what is bothering you. You can request an interior treatment, an exterior treatment or both. We will explain the options, rather than assume you need every service.
Our pest-control service is backed by a completed NZQA Level 3 qualification in urban pest management. See our qualifications and safety practices.
If your house also needs washing, we can coordinate that work. Exterior washing happens before exterior BugBlock, once suitable surfaces are clean and dry. A house wash is not required before every insect treatment.
